a note from Johnny…

This week my sister popped in!

It was also the final one in Westminster before the recess break where MPs head back to their constituencies for the summer. As it goes, it has been a pretty busy finale with debates in the House and and plenty going on in Defence Committee too, as well as working hard to ascertain what Plymouth’s future is under a new Government in a post-BREXIT Britain.

First up on Monday, I spoke at length in the Trident debate. It has such importance to our dockyard and our local economy, and I wanted to convey to Ministers and other MPs of this importance. Equally, I pressed the case hard for the government to continue with putting the security of this country and its people at the forefront of their decision making. You can watch my contribution here.

In Defence Committee on Tuesday, we took evidence from the Defence Secretary around theWarsaw Summit and the Chilcot report. I also used the time to raise directly to the Secretary of State for Defence the historical allegation investigations underway against serving former members of the military. Watch it here.

I was very concerned this week with the delays on the Navy frigates that have been announced, and the knock-on effects on employment and base-porting considerations for our proud Naval communities in Plymouth. On Wednesday, I interviewed the First Sea Lord and new procurement Minster on the subject. You can watch that exchange here.

I also had a much reported exchange with the Secretary of State where I impressed upon him the important contribution to performance on operations that looking after our people has. In a week where data released showed that just 16% of people think the much heralded Military Covenant is working and worthwhile, and over half of the Armed Forces are yet to find out what it actually is, we still have much work to be done in this area. You can watch that exchange here.

I’ll be off in the early part of the summer for a break with the family, but you can still get in touch via email, on the phone or through social media. I’m currently organising a surgery tour of the constituency in August and there will be more details on that soon.

With best wishes.

Johnny
