Yesterday, Johnny Mercer was reappointed to the House of Commons Defence Select Committee. Johnny had served on the committee since being elected for the first time in 2015 since when he has played a pivotal role in inquiries ranging from the anti-malarial drug, Mefloquine to the MODs duty of care to soldiers in training. He also chaired the high profile sub-committee into the IHAT which has been accused of being a ‘witch-hunt’ and ‘hounding’ former and serving personnel.
The MP for Plymouth Moor View has also been elected to Health Committee where he will serve alongside Chair and former GP Dr Sarah Wollaston. Setting out key principles when he was first elected, Johnny has sought to progress improvements in mental health care, the stigma surrounding it and also Plymouth’s allocation in health funding arrangements. The newly elected member now intends to bring this work with him onto the committee to shine a national light onto what can be done better.
