Today, Friday 5 February, Johnny Mercer MP secured a commitment from Chair of the Defence Select Committee, Dr Julian Lewis MP, to hold an inquiry into the actions of the ongoing Iraq Historic Allegation Team investigation.
The inquiry will be spearheaded by the Member of Parliament for Plymouth Moor View in either a sub-committee, or at full committee level. While the exact terms of reference are still to be determined, the aim of the inquiry will be to deliver a short and focused report that seeks to provide some light to the workings of the IHAT investigation, and some assurances to those who find themselves caught up with IHAT.
Johnny Mercer MP, said:
“I have received a large number of concerning stories from both serving and former members of HM Armed Forces where the first news they have heard of allegations made against them is a knock at the door from someone potentially entirely removed from the MOD.
“I raised these concerns with the Chair of the Defence Committee and it was decided that the most appropriate course of action would be to respond to these severe examples with an official Defence Committee inquiry and report.
“I strongly believe in the duty that we have in the House of Commons to those who have served our bidding. No other country is putting it’s service men and women through the shambolic process that is IHAT and Operation Northmoor. The very least we can do is make sure that they are looked after properly.”
