I have recent been made aware of the decision in principle that Plymouth Studio School is closed. This was following a period of significant difficulty, during which all efforts to support the school were made. I must first and foremost stress that I am committed to ensuring that there is no interruption in the education of pupils currently at the school.
The announcement has clearly caused great concern, which is absolutely understandable. I have and will continue to work with the Local Authority, who are running a consultation later today to answer questions and reiterate their commitment to support the families affected going forwards, as well as the Regional School Commissioner and Department of Education. Part of the consultation process involved robust assessment of the ability for the Local Authority to ensure that they could meet the needs of the children affected and given the current surplus of secondary school placements in Plymouth, it was felt this could be done.
Unfortunately the performance of the school failed to show significant improvement; the current Ofsted report is due imminently.
I am deeply disappointed that this decision has been made, given my personal investment and interest in the school and am committed to ensuring I provide all and any support I can.
